Spotlight: Michael A. Harris, BS’04, DDS’08

Dr. Harris is a general dentist focused on integrative and holistic dentistry in Indianapolis, IN. He was interviewed by Baindu Bayon, PhD, Neal-Marshall Alumni Club Board Member.

When did you attend Indiana University?

I graduated from North Central High School in 2000 and moved down to Bloomington that fall. From there I packed as much as I could into my time there and I graduated in 2004 with degrees in Biology and Chemistry.

What is your fondest memory of Indiana University?

I have less a single favorite memory than a collection of memories that together give me a feeling of community. Saturday football tailgates. The Final Four run in 2003. Greek life. Road trips with friends I made in the dorms. They all sort of run together but the net result is that Bloomington still feels like home to a certain extent.

What have you been up to since your time at Indiana University?

After graduation I went on to pursue a doctorate in dentistry (DDS) which I completed in 2008. Since then I’ve been working as a clinical general dentist with occasional teaching duties. Traveling as much as the law will allow. The usual. I eventually moved back to Indianapolis to be closer to my family, where I have a private practice now focusing on holistic and integrative oral health. That takes up most of my time now along with chasing my son around who is about a year old.

How do you stay connected to friends you made while at Indiana University?

My IU alumni friends who live close have a series of group texts that we use often. We try to get together for meals and casual hangouts as much as is possible. For friends who live further there is always Instagram and to a lesser degree, Facebook to help us stay abreast of what is happening. Homecoming is a good time to visit of course, but a trip on a weekend with less fanfare is often a good choice to slow the pace and enjoy Bloomington in a different way. We’ve made as many memories post graduation as we did while we were students.
