The call of Thanksgiving

November is a time to celebrate the spirit of Thanksgiving in the America. No matter where you serve IU and its alumni, please accept our deep and sincere thanks for your steadfast leadership and support.

America’s Thanksgiving story begins in 1621 when the Puritan settlers and members of the Wampanoag tribe gathered to celebrate the autumn harvest. For centuries, teachers across these United States have taught this as a lesson in community and tolerance.

Building on this story, the “Indiana Promise” pledge at Freshman Induction calls entering IU students to treat others with civility, dignity, respect, and understanding.

As beneficiaries of both the American Thanksgiving tradition and Indiana Promise, Indiana University alumni are called to act in a manner consistent with these lessons and values. Please ask yourself how you will model the way for others:

How will I act in a manner consistent with that first Thanksgiving and the Indiana Promise to foster civility and understanding?

How will I foster dialogues at holiday gatherings when friends and loved ones disagree?

How will I emulate Herman B Wells in my business, community, and domestic affairs, whose life exemplifies how I can be a community-builder and peacemaker in times of change and conflict?

This is both our calling and legacy as leaders of our beloved alma mater.

Please share your stories of leadership with me, either by posting replies or writing me directly at jt@iu.edu.

With profound gratitude and thanks,
JT.
