Recognize Burnout for Better Worklife Integration

As we enter into the new year of 2021, setting goals and reflecting on the previous year is common, especially after such a memorable (and for some, challenging) 2020. How can we improve? What can we change to make our lives better?

Even after a winter break, you may feel the “Sunday Blues” as you return to work in January or you may worry that the break caused additional stress that fueled your burnout, rather than rest and relaxation you’d hoped for. Taking a look at several aspects of your life can help bring into focus those areas you can give greater awareness to in order to make subtle changes that can make big differences. Those aspects include your work, health, and play.

During the week of January 25, 2021, our coaches and other alumni experts will explore these aspects in hopes of giving you resources needed to overcome your burnout and feel more fulfilled in your life and career in 2021. Starting on Monday with an overview and diving into work, health, and play on the following days, here are the aspects and what resources to expect on those highlighted days.

Work

This aspect goes beyond what you get paid to do in your career/job. It may include consulting, advising, and even the “work” at home like raising a family, chores, and maintaining a household. Whether you’re working from home or you’re back in the office, finding strategies to be more productive and engaged in your work will bring greater and longer lasting career satisfaction. With the help of the IUAA career coaches, explore when you are at your best and worst at work and easy-to-implement strategies that can make every work day more fulfilling. Health

This aspect goes beyond the physical to include your emotional and mental health. It’s not just about eating right and getting enough exercise—think bigger as to what you need to have your highest quality of life. Hear from IU alumna and wellness expert Jean Sherfick on ways to improve your sleep routine and to prioritize your self-care. Video clips go live on the Virtual Alumni Network on Wednesday, January 27.

Play

Often times the most under-looked and lowest rated by alumni clients, this aspect focuses on what you do that brings you pure joy. It might be an organized activity (kickball league), an experience (going to a concert), or one where you can be creative (painting pottery), but play is something without an end goal except enjoyment. How have you prioritized play in your life?
